Catnip is the first resource unlocked in Kittens Game, available right at the start. It is a food source for your kittens. Catnip can also be refined into wood.
- Catnip is generated initially by clicking the "Gather catnip" button at the Bonfire, which gives you 1 catnip.
- Once you have gathered 10 catnip, you can build Catnip Fields, which automatically produce 0.125 catnip per tick. Fields produce additional catnip during the Spring, and significantly less during the Winter.
- Catnip Fields' production is further affected by weather.
- After you research Agriculture, you can assign Kittens to be Farmers, who will produce 1 catnip per tick (net gain of 0.15 catnip per kitten per tick).
- After you research Engineering, you can build Aqueducts, which make fields and farmers produce 3% more catnip.
- In the Workshop, you can research Mineral Hoes for a 50% boost to farmer production, and Iron Hoes for a 30% boost. These upgrades stack additively with each other.
- Sharks will give you catnip in return for 100 iron. The amount will vary based on the season and the number of Tradeposts you have.
- High levels of pollution reduce catnip production.
- After you reach Yarn and research Hydroponics, you can build Hydroponics, which each increase the catnip production by 2.5%.
- Assuming the decimal version of percentages: Total Catnip Production = (base * (1 + weather) + village * (1 + upgrades)) * (1 + buildings) - demand - pollution - conversion
- The primary purpose of catnip is that it is a food source for your kittens.
- Kittens will starve to death if there is insufficient catnip.
- Each kitten requires 0.85 catnip per tick, or 4.25 catnip per second.
- Catnip demand can be reduced by Pastures (0.5% each) and Unicorn Pastures (0.15% each). This demand reduction is subject to diminishing return with a cap of 50%.
- Catnip consumption is increased when happiness is above 100%. For example, a happiness of 420% will increase catnip consumption by 320%.
- As described in policies, Rationing decreases the catnip consumption increase from happiness.
- After you research Robotic Assistance, catnip consumption for workers is reduced by 25%.
- The formula for overall catnip demand
- no. of kittens x base catnip consumption x (1 - demand reduction) x
- Example: If there are 160 kittens, 47 pastures, 10 unicorn pastures, 180% happiness, robotic assistance researched and all kittens are working:
- 160 x 4.25 catnip/s x (1 - 25%) x {1 + (180% - 1 ) x 75%} = 816 catnip/s
- Catnip is required to build Catnip Fields.
- Catnip is requires to build Pastures.
- Catnip can be refined into catnip wood.
- After you gather 100 catnip, you gain access to the "Refine catnip" button, which can initially refine 100 catnip into 1 wood.
- The Catnip Enrichment upgrade increases the efficiency so refining costs 50 catnip instead.
- This does not benefit from normal crafting bonuses.
- After you research Biology, you can build Bio Labs, which improve the effectiveness of catnip refinement by 10%.
- After you research Biochemistry, you can get Biofuel Processing, which causes your Bio Labs to automatically convert catnip into oil.
- Initially, you can only store up to 5000 catnip. Additional catnip after this point is lost.
- After you research Agriculture, you can build Barns, which increase catnip capacity by 5000 each.
- After you research Construction, you can build Warehouses. Initially, Warehouses do not store catnip. After you research Silos, each Warehouse increases the catnip capacity by 750 each.
- The barn catnip storage bonus above also applies to Warehouses (i.e. max +108.75%)
- After you research Navigation, you can build Harbours, which increase catnip capacity by 2500 each.
- The barn catnip storage bonus above also applies to Harbours (i.e. max +108.75%)
- After you research Expanded Cargo, Harbour storage (including catnip) is increased by 1% per trade ship, up to a limit of 225% with diminishing returns. After you research Reactor Vessel, this limit is increased by 5% per Reactor.
- After you research Particle Physics, you can build Accelerators, which increase catnip capacity by 30000 each if you have the Energy Rifts upgrade.
- The accelerator storage (including catnip) is increased by various accelerator upgrades, including Stasis Chambers (+95%), Void Energy (+75%), Dark Energy (+250%) and Tachyon Accelerators (+500%). These bonuses are additive.
- Max accelerator storage bonus is +(90%+75%+250%+500%) = +920%.
- After you complete Moon Mission, you can build Moon Bases, which increase catnip capacity by 45K each.
- After you research AI Bases, each AI Core increases the Moon Base storage capacity (including catnip) by 10%.
- Cryostations do not provide any catnip storage.
- Global Catnip Storage Capacity Bonus
- After you research Refrigeration, the overall catnip storage capacity is increased by 75%.
- After you reach Yarn and research Hydroponics, you can build Hydroponics, which each increase the catnip storage capacity by 10%.
- These two bonuses are additive. For example, if you have Refrigeration and have 50 Hydroponics, the catnip storage capacity bonus is +(75%+10%x50) = +575%
- Paragon Storage Capacity Bonus
- Each paragon gives 0.1% storage capacity bonus.
- Each burned paragon gives 0.05% capacity storage capacity bonus before Dark Future, and 0.2% during Dark Future.
- The above two paragon storage capacity bonuses are additive.
- Global Storage Capacity Bonus
- Each Void Rift increase all storage capacity by 2%.
- Each Event Horizon increase all storage capacity by 10% permanently.
- The above two bonuses are additive.
- The catnip storage capacity of each storage building is:
- Base storage capacity x (1+ relevant building upgrade bonus) x (1 + global catnip storage bonus) x (1 + paragon storage bonus) x (1 + global storage bonus)
