Pollution penalizes a kitten village based on environmentally unfriendly activity.
Pollution is created by most buildings that consume energy or produce it by burning fossil fuels, along with others that are especially environmentally damaging. Those buildings, starting with Mines will generate a certain amount of pollution per tick.
Pollution stats in ppm will be shown once you have researched Ecology, and more details can be shown in the Science tab using the following code line game.detailedPollutionInfo=true
in the browser console.
Building | Pollution per tick |
---|---|
Mine | .08 |
Smelter | .15 |
Quarry | .25 |
Calciner | 1 |
Steamworks | 1 |
Magneto | 5 |
Oil Well (Automation) | 1 |
Factory (Automation, w/o Carbon Sequestration) | 2 |
Factory (Automation, w/ Carbon Sequestration) | 1 |
1ppm displayed in the game equals a pollution amount of 1e5 (0.1M, 100000)
This base pollution is reduced in several ways.
Renewable energy bonus: solar farms, hydro plants, and satellites count as renewable energy, while reactors count for half (half of your kittens think they are green energy, and half think they will ruin the planet forever).
Pollution is reduced by a proportion equal to half the ratio of (clean energy) / (clean energy + polluting energy). Energy production that is neither green nor polluting (sunlifters, etc) do not affect the pollution reduction ratio.
Policies: Environmentalism, Conservation and Sustainability each reduce pollution by 5%, while environmentally harmful policies increase pollution by the same amount.
Carbon sequestration: a workshop upgrade that makes factories pollution neutral and unlocks automation. Activating automation on factory increases its energy consumption to 4wt, and makes them consume 2 points per tick.
Cath has plants that can consume pollution the more pollution there is. This effect is small (1e-7).
In each pollution level a new negative effect might appear:
Lvl | Starts at | PPM | New Penalty |
---|---|---|---|

Catnip production is linear until level 2, at which it follows an LDR formula and never goes above 75%.
Kitten happiness is reduced linearly in level 1 and follows a logarithmic scale after that.
Kitten arrival speed is reduced linearly in level 2 and follows a logarithmic scale after that.
The Solar Revolution bonus to wood and catnip is reduced linearly in level 4 and reaches 100% reduction in level 5.
The exact effect values can be seen by typing game.bld.pollutionEffects
into the browser console.
