Steel is a very important craftable resource used as a building material.
- The main way to produce steel is by crafting it in the Workshop. Each craft costs 100 iron + 100 coal.
- The amount of steel produced is affected by normal crafting boosts.
- After Steel Plants is researched, Calciners automatically use 10% of the iron they produce to craft steel.
- This automatic crafting is not affected by normal crafting bonuses.
- With the Automated Plants upgrade, this crafting benefits from 25% of your regular crafting boost.
- With the Nuclear Plants upgrade, this crafting is increased by 2% for each Reactor.
- Note that this is applied as an auto-crafting effect, rather direct steel production. This means that:
- As 1.0.9.2, this is buggy — sometimes it believes that you don't have enough coal to craft steel when you actually do. It is unclear as to exactly what produces this bug, but if the Calciner tooltip doesn't indicate any coal consumption / steel production then neither is occurring.
- When this effect is active, Calciners will consume coal.
- The amount of steel produced is not improved by normal crafting bonuses, nor is it affected by faith directly, so this auto-crafting will always be less efficient than manual crafting.
- Unlike the auto crafting of beams, slabs, and plates provided by the Steamworks building, the Calciner's effects are applied each and every tick.
- The amount of steel produced (and therefore iron and coal production lost) varies depending on how much iron a single Calciner can produce in a tick. Therefore, with a sufficiently large Solar Revolution (> 10K %) bonus, a large amount of steel can be auto-crafted in this way per Calciner.
